The University of Michigan plans to construct a $1.2B data center for classified nuclear weapons research and AI computing in Ypsilanti Township. The project threatens residents' health, will nearly double the university's carbon emissions, and disrupts the Huron River watershed.
This is environmental racism in action. UM selected a diverse, working-class community that lacks the resources to fight a multi-billion-dollar institution. They have ignored outcry from residents and instead used special privileges as a public university to bypass local zoning requirements, site reviews, and township votes. When Ypsilanti Township passed a water hookup moratorium on computing sites to protect its community, the university threatened legal action and claimed the policy was "unlawfully discriminatory" against data centers. Worse, they refuse to sign a Community Benefit Agreement to protect local residents.
We are student organizers mobilizing on campus to hold UM accountable. We refuse to let our university exploit neighboring communities and poison the environment.
